In Memoriam
After receiving his BA, medical degree and MS (Urology) from Temple University, he did his internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Philadelphia, and surgical residency at Maimonides Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y., before serving in the United States Public Health Service from 1951-1953. He returned to Temple University Hospital to complete his urology residency, and joined the faculty in 1956 as a Presidential Appointee. By 1969 he was a full Professor of Urology at Temple University School of Medicine, eventually becoming Emeritus Professor in 1992. However, he worked at AFSCME's clinics and Temple's Urology Clinic and continued to mentor residents until his retirement at age 85. In a rare double appointment, he was also Professor of Surgery and Chief, Division of Urology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania from 1964 to 1997. He served terms as President of the Philadelphia Urologic Society and President of the Medical Staff at MCP,

and was well known by colleagues and all of the hospital staff for his humor, kindness and expertise. He made it a point to know his patients
and their families well, often treating them throughout their lifetimes. He taught thousands of medical students and residents in various specialties at both medical schools, enjoying special relationships with his urology residents. He was awarded the Golden Apple SAMA Teaching Award in both 1969 and 1980, as well as the Christian R. and Mary Lindback Award for Outstanding Teaching. As a pediatric urologist at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, he led one of the teams that performed the first kidney transplant in Philadelphia. He was the author of many articles, books and book chapters, including Karafin and Kendall's Textbook of Urology. A popular lecturer and speaker, he made over 150 invited presentations, television and radio appearances around the country. He loved to travel, held a pilot's license, and read two or three books each week, usually history, biography or baseball lore. When running became popular, he embraced the sport, and completed eight marathons, including the New York City Marathon, the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C., and the Penn Relays, as well as innumerable Philadelphia Distance Runs. He played golf, baseball and tennis - where he would confound his opponents with both left and right forehands, an ambidexterity he found useful in the operating room as well. He was a fountain of knowledge on Philadelphia history. |
